Ubuntu Nomenclature

After reading Tristan Rhodes on Planet Ubuntu. I realised that I don’t see a difference in (X)(K)Ubuntu. To me it is just Ubuntu with whatever DE. I never stay true to any one DE either, Gnome and KDE most of the time but, XFCE, E17, and various *box’s steal my attention every now and then.

I reinstall constantly, as a direct result of my infernal tinkering and probably some form of OCD. Sometimes I install from a Kubuntu Live CD and (un)install anything I do (or don’t) need. Sometimes I might just install a base system from an alternate CD and install bits of DE’s as I go. It doesn’t matter, its all Ubuntu. Which reminds me…. I must write my “Praise be to AptOnCD” article.

In summary, away with ye prefixes of old, that hark back to days of every app starting with a g- or a k-. Bring on sensible nomenclature that your chemistry teacher would be proud of.

Revolve.

KDE 4.0 Beta 1 on Gutsy

Today saw the first beta release of the much-talked about KDE 4.0. So I’m gonna give it a spin. Thankfully I’ve been running Gutsy Gibbon now for a week without any serious hiccups (I’ll write up my gripes and glories with it at a later date) and the KDE4 beta packages (3.92.0) are available in the repos! So hopefully this will as smooth a process as you can expect from running a beta DE on an alpha OS.

Wish me luck!

The Obligatory Disclaimer and Warning

Blah blah blah, Gutsy Gibbon is an experimental piece of gadgetry and may break your computer because you are an idiot. DO NOT RUN ON PRODUCTION MACHINES AS YOU MAKE YOUR COMPOOTER ASPLODE. Despite this I have run Ubuntu alphas on my main “production” machine since Dapper Flight 3 without any serious asploding. (except that time when X was updated messed up and everything was borked :) good times…..)

Who’s afraid of the big bad Wolfe?

I recently read “Ubuntu Linux ain’t Easy as Dell” and “Ubuntu Aftermath: Puncturing the Linux “Urban Legend” by the supposedly tech-savvy Alexander Wolfe of Information Week. To be honest, I’m surprised and disappointed that such an individual has resorted to such narrow minded articles. Taken in kind with the latest linux bashing by the same man, “Too Many Linux Distros Make for Open Source Mess”, I start to believe that he may be exploiting the oft-derided “up-in-arms” defensive attitude of the Open Source community to spread his own brand of technical ballbaggery.

Wire MacGuyver and Pokemon

Today my phone’s battery died. I’m at work so I don’t have a charger. I do have my laptop, but the data cable for my phone has been acting wonky lately and won’t charge my phone. This was a dilemma. Either I let my phone die and try to make contact with the relevant human beings by some other primitive means, or I run home immediately after work and charge my phone. Neither of these outcomes being acceptable I rallied my MacGuyvering skills.

Good things come in THREE’s!

Third post today…. you’re a lucky bunch of non-existent blog fans.
Anyways this post is about 3‘s and how great they are.
Everybody Loves 3.

Third
Time Lucky
Three Little Pigs
Three Billy Goats Gruff
Three Blind Mice
Cerberus, the three headed hound of hell in greek mythology.
Three primary colours (in light and art)

It seems that we (as a species) hold the number three with a certain awe.

ONE is me, TWO is you, THREE…. well that just downright magical.

SO now I finally come to the point of the post….. COMMAND AND CONQUER 3.
